| The adult of the Syrphus ribesii is a Diptera of 11 - 14 mms of length. It has a bronzy - gilded thoracic corslet and yellowish scutellum; the abdomen is blackish with two yellowish ovoidal stains under the scutellum and three great yellowish transversal bands interrupted in the median line. The larvas (10 - 14 mms) are apod, with an aspect typically mucilaginous. They have a whitish color with two vanished side bands, of orange - reddish color; the central part, correspondent to the bowel, is darker. The anterior part of the body is tapered and hold. This Syrphidae spends the winter in the stadium of pupa, at times of mature larva, and it completes 3 - 4 generations a year. Its larvas, from May to September develop a voracious predatory activity towards Aphids of different species; the adults instead, as all the Syrphidae, are glycifagous. |
