HAZEL TREE
|
Description:
Adult: 1,5 mm long; globe-shaped; pale green to slightly pinkish. This aphid, being similar in coloration to plant petioles, is difficult to detect.
Biology:
This species occurs almost exclusively on new shoots, young twigs and especially fruit-bearing twigs of hazel.
Life cycle:
An autoecious species overwintering in the egg stage, eggs being black and laid at the base of those buds which, in spring, will carry female flowers. There are several generations per year.
Damage:
Affected plant parts, especially hazelnuts and their cupules, do not become distorted but are covered with vast quantities of honeydew and sooty moulds. The size of hazelnuts is sometimes reduced.
